G-Shocks with serial numbers / edition number

Following on from a thread posted a few days ago regarding numbered G-Shocks wondered who has numbered G-Shocks in their collection.

Had a look through my modest selection and found four with serial number as follows
  1. DW-5200
  2. GW-M5600 (laser etched)
  3. GW-200Z Frogman
  4. GW-9300 (laser etched)

Sadly none of the limited edition I have are numbered, i.e. xxxx/1000 or whatever. The DW-5200 and Frog have a nice old school 'stamped' serial. The newer GW-M5600 and GW-9300 both seem to have lase etched serial numbers.

I only have less than a handful that are LE numbered xxxx/2000 xxxx/2008 xxxx/5000 for DW-6900SW-6ER. All of my Masters of G's, screw-backs have serial numbers including GX-56/GXW-56s, Gravity Defiers. LOL, going to check all my Gs when I'm home.

I noticed when I was snapping photos of The Hundreds GW-5610 that it had a serial number which when I saw it for the first time that I thought it was random, LOL.

My Japan made ones have a serial number except the DW-6900FS.
My Thailand made ones don't have a serial number except the GBA-800.

What mandates a G-Shock to have a serial number?
