I was also having a bit of trouble reading the date in some light. To address this I decided to try a magnifier, also known as a cyclops. I ordered a large one from Otto Frei. As a comment, the bullet shaped ons do not seem to have the same magnifying power as the rectangular and round ones. However, it does seem a bit easier to read.
A tip, get it exactly where you want it before placing it where it is exposed to sunlight. Once exposed, the cement sets very fast.
I still have a bit more cleaning to do on it. The excess cement cleans up with an exacto knife and acetone.
