Looking for a first G-Shock

Hello, I am looking for my first G-Shock.

Features that I need are military time, and date and time. I work as a Corrections Officer.

My current watch is a cheapie from Target, but it has a nice analog face, with a digital military time slot, and a digital date/day slot. These features are key for me.

I would prefer a stainless band with black resin centers of the links, if you know what I mean.
An analog face, with digital military time slot
date/day can be either analog or digital doesn't matter

The watch in this youtube vid has the basic look I am seeking, but unsure about features/price/model.

Please steer me in the right direction, there are hundreds of g-shocks out there and it is overwhelming, and hard to find the functions and style I am looking for lol

Welcome to the site Chris :D G-shock is a good choice for watch in your line of work.

Assume by military time you mean 24 hour time, i.e. 6pm represented as 18:00 etc? All G-shocks are able to represented the time as 24h or AM/Pm so you're good on that one. As for date all g-shocks represent the date in US / ISO format, i.e. MM-DD. Some also have year and a relative few can represent date as DD-MM. Don't think any analog Gs have a analog date window, the date is always displayed digitally.

Anyhow should be able to find an ani/digi G with a stainless / resin band.

The model in the video is the MTG-1500-1AER (as best as I can tell!).

Price wise USD$540 is about the best this seems to be around for > http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw...G-1500*&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

At the more modest end of the scale you could look at the classic G-100.

This has a resin band and strap, however you should be able to pick one up for well under USD$100 > http://www.ebay.com/sch/Wristwatches-/31387/i.html?_nkw=G-100&_catref=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m1538

Another option is the GW-3500, from the aviation series

This comes either with a resin strap, for example the GW-3500B-1

GW-3500B-1AJF.jpg

Or stainless strap, for example the GW-3500BD-1

GW-3500BD-1AJF.jpg

Price varies on these depending on strap, check them out here > http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw...0bd&_osacat=31387&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313

Sure there are other options, hopefully someone else will make more suggestions :D

Did someone say they wanted another opinion? :encouragement:

I like (and own) the GW-3000B - resin band, solar battery and atomic timekeeping. Easy to read analog hands and date window, sub dial shows 24 hour time. No good for use in unlit areas though. £150 UK - you can reckon that what costs £1 in UK is $1 stateside.

I believe you can get this with a metal bracelet as well

If you can live with a resin strap and don't want to spend a lot of money the GA-100 series gets you a lot of wrist presence for (relatively) little money - certainly less than $100:

The only problem with these is that the fakers are busy making very bad quality copies - often distinguished by the little hand on the sub dial being printed and shown upright, not at rest.

That's my two pennorth / two cents, time for someone else to give their opinions!

Thanks for the replies!

My current watch is a cheap $20 Mossimo that I got from Target. My girlfriend works at Target, so I actually got the watch for $10 with her discount, and then had to spend another $10 at a jewelery store to get the band sized. It has the functions that I wanted (analog face, digital date/day, and digital army time), as well as the Stainless/black resin look that I was after. But it is cheap, and definetely will not last through cell extractions, and hands on ICS's with inmates which is unfortunately part of my everyday job as a Corrections Officer.

Here is a link to the Mossimo watch
http://www.target.com/p/Silver-Meta...-Dial-Analog-Digital-Round-Watch/-/A-10348362

Obviously my dream watch is the MTG-1500-1AER, but with a $550+ pricetag it is out of my price range.

I really like the Stainless bands, but am really starting to appreciate the Resin bands. They seem like they may be more durable, comfortable, and affordable.

What would be a good idea for a watch that is:
$200ish range
Analog face
Digital date/day
Digital army time
Illumination, at least a little bit if possible

The GA-100 looks like a good starting point, but I know that there is a perfect G-Shock out there somewhere for less than $500

I am wondering about your "clients" and whether they will find a metal band easier to undo than a resin band with buckle if they have any reason to try and cause you difficulty. There are always a lot of used shocks being traded on eBay, might be an idea to get one to test the idea of a shock for work before committing serious money.

Also there are a lot more options in the second hand market for ana-digi watches with the features you require. Looking on the bay (and asking in here about anything you see but aren't sure of) should give you a feel for what is available.

Good luck with the search!

No problem. Resin is indeed very practical.

Couple more suggestions for you based on the above list.

G-300 which can do day and date together and has an EL. A bit smaller than the GA-100 - which may or may not be a benefit for you? The model pictured is the G-300ML-1ACR which is available from amazon for USD$99 currently > http://www.amazon.com/Casio-G300ML-...IK/ref=sr_1_41?ie=UTF8&qid=1326709266&sr=8-41

51PX3cpkyiL.jpg

Another option might be the G-1250D-1A. Know this is stainless rather than resin but it ticks most of the boxes and quite importantly is on amazon for USD$199 which is a pretty good price (retail normally USD$300 plus) > http://www.amazon.com/Casio-Mens-G-...SM/ref=sr_1_70?ie=UTF8&qid=1326709572&sr=8-70

Can't think of much else from the current line up which would meet your specification - of course someone else might have more ideas. There are other Casios outside the g-Shock line which might suit, those from Edifice and other ranges. However sounds like the extra toughness of the G-Shock might be something you need....

There is always plenty up for grabs on eBay. You might also want to check somewhere out like Macys - think they normally have a reasonably good range of G-Shocks. You could at least get an idea of what was available and / or what you like.

@chrisd- if your working asa a corrections officer maybe a mudman woud be a good choice, your not going to be in the mud a lot but the watch itself is very strong

G-9000-1.jpg
or a new mudman which costs a bit more

Ok, so after a lot or researching and combing through ebay and amazon, I think I have it narrowed down to two choices.

G-Shock Solar Aviator Aviation G1250D-1A G-1250D-1ADR
http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-Shock-Sol...626759222?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item1e69f62a36

Or a

G-SHOCK CASIO X-LARGE BLACK WATCH GSHOCK GA110-1A BNIB
http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-SHOCK-CAS...927191370?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item337049694a

I like the metal band of the G1250D, and I like the overall look of the black/red GA110-1A. But I have a question about the GA110 series. Can someone please help me to learb the difference between the 1A, B, and C models? They appear to be the same, except for the price. Is there a benefit or difference between the models? Thank you all for your help, deciding on a G-shock is a tough process lol

Two good choice, you'll not go wrong with either :encouragement:

Quick guide on G-Shock model numbers here. The differences between the various models will be cosmetic mostly. The GA-110-1A has a positive digital dial

GA-110-1A.jpg

And GA-110-1B has a negative digital dial and a slightly different colour dial.

Couldn't find the 1C but didn't look too hard.
