How to repaint G-Shock bezel text

After years of sterling service it's quite likely the painted text on your G-Shock resin bezel has worn and faded. The inlaid text can be repainted quite easily, this guide will show you how.

[top]What you need

  • Enamal model paint (Humbrol or similar in the UK, Testors or similar in the US). Others have used nail gloss however we have not tried this.
    • White for the white text. The actual colour Casio use is off white, however we normally just use white.
    • Red for the red text. Humbrol colour code.....
  • A modelling paintbrush or similar
  • Cloth, something like kitchen roll
  • Isopropyl alcohol or acetone for removing excess paint
  • Tools for removing band and bezel (optional)

[top]Clean the G-Shock bezel

The first step is very important - clean the bezel. The article How to clean a G-Shock will tell you how to.

[top]Remove the G-Shock band and bezel (optional)

This step is optional but will make the job a lot easier.

[top]First coat of paint on the bezel text

Using your small brush paint the bezel text. Try to get good coverage without applying an overly thick coat. Also try to ensure you keep any overpaint to a minimum.

Once you've done a first coat you should be left with something like this.

Now allow the paint to dry for an hour or two.

[top]Clean excess paint

Once the paint has more or less dried you can wipe the excess off. We used a piece of kitchen roll soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Be as careful as possible to remove overpaint and not remove bezel text.

Chances are the text will be less than perfect and a second coat will be required.

[top]Second coat of paint on the bezel text

Repeat the painting step as per the first coat. Carefully paint over the bezel text with a small brush.

[top]Clean excess paint from second coat

Once the paint has more or less dried you can wipe the excess off once again. We used a piece of kitchen roll soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Be as careful as possible to remove overpaint and not remove bezel text.

Hopefully two coats (if not one) should be sufficient. If not apply a third!

[top]Reassemble watch and inspect results

Put the watchback together and inspect your results. As you can see from our example watch the result are reasonable. In this case the bezel is rather scratched from use, the paint tends to get in these small scratches. Overall the result is good, your mileage may of course vary.
